== jQuery Grid for Rails - powerful AJAX grid/table component.

jQuery Grid for Rails is (surprise, surprise) a Rails plugin wrapping the jqGrid jQuery plugin (http://www.trirand.com/blog/), making it super easy to include and use from a Rails application, with a full-fledged tutorial and example app (http://www.rubyrailways.com/add-a-powerful-ajax-table-to-your-rails-application-in-5-minutes/). jQuery Grid for Rails enables you to embed a powerful (sorting, drag and drop, in-place edit, multi selection, subgrids…), highly customizable and easy to use (configured via YAML) AJAX grid/table into your app in no time!

== Installation

script/plugin install git://github.com/scrubber/jquery_grid_for_rails.git

This is quite unlikely, but if the CSS/js and sample config file (sample.yaml) to get you started were not copied properly, run the setup rake task: rake jquery_grid_for_rails:setup

== Usage

First you need to define how your grid will look like - check out config/jquery_grid/sample.yaml to get an idea.
Once it is set up, there are 5 helpers at your disposal:

These 2 (js and CSS includes) should go into your application template (or wherever you’d like to use the component)

<%= include_jquery_grid_javascript %>
<%= include_jquery_grid_css %>

and these into the page where you’d like to display the grid:

To generate the grid:

<%= jquery_grid :my_super_cool_grid, {:url => grid_data_url } %>

To insert it into the page:

<%= jquery_grid_table %>
<%= jquery_grid_pager %>

obviously you can omit jquery_grid_pager if you are not going to use pagination.

== Yaml Semantics and Tricks

The yaml file is mostly just an everyday dull yaml file, with these exceptions:

  • the top level has has 2 keys: :before with a string value (this string is pasted before the jqGrid call in javascript as-is) and :params,
    which are the grid params

  • <grid_name> will be translated into the grid name (the id used for the table containing the grid). This is useful for example here:
    📟 $(‘#<grid_name>_pager’)
    so you don’t have to hardcode the name of the grid, and thus your configuration is more reusable and flexible

  • to declare a javascript function use function_fname (where fname will be the name of the function in javascript), put the params on the
    first row as you would in normal JS and omit opening/closing curly braces. It sounds complicated, but it is not:

    :function_onSelectRow: “(id)
    if(id && id!==lastsel2) {
    $(‘#<grid_name>’).restoreRow(lastsel2);
    $(‘#<grid_name>’).editRow(id,true);
    lastsel2=id;
    }”

    Anyway, it’s unlikely you will need too much functions besides in-place editing, which you have above.

Don’t worry about these - you won’t need this info in 99% of the cases. Just edit the sample config file, open the jqGrid documentation and you’ll be fine.
